A bifold door that catches, sags or pulls apart at the join is often blamed on the hinge. Sometimes that is correct. But a successful bifold door hinge replacement starts with confirming whether the failed part is actually a hinge, a pivot, a guide or a worn track component. These parts work together, and fitting the wrong replacement can leave the door no better than before.

For Australian homes, bifold doors commonly appear on wardrobes, laundries, pantries and room dividers. Older systems can be difficult to identify because manufacturers have used different hinge shapes, pivot arrangements and hole spacings over the years. The good news is that most faults can be repaired without replacing the whole door system, provided the replacement hardware matches the original arrangement.

Bifold Door Hinge Replacement Starts With Identification

A true bifold hinge joins two door leaves together. It allows the leaves to fold inwards as the door opens, while keeping their faces aligned when closed. On a typical wardrobe bifold, there may be one hinge near the top, one near the bottom and sometimes another through the middle, depending on the door height and weight.

The first check is simple: open the door slowly and watch the fault. If the two panels separate, scrape against each other, or one panel hangs lower than the other, inspect the hinges. Look for loose screws, split timber around the screw holes, bent leaves, cracked knuckles or a hinge pin working its way out.

If the whole door has dropped, jumps out of the track or will not fold properly at the opening, the problem may instead be at the top pivot, bottom pivot, guide or roller. These parts carry and locate the door. Replacing a sound hinge will not correct a worn pivot socket or damaged top track.

Before ordering anything, remove one damaged hinge if practical. Photograph it beside a tape measure, including the overall height and width, the spacing between screw holes, the thickness of the hinge leaves and the diameter of the pin or knuckle. Also take a clear photo of the door, its track and the mounting position. This provides the information needed to find a compatible part rather than relying on a description such as “small wardrobe hinge”.

Check Whether the Hinge Is the Only Fault

Bifold hardware works as a system. A hinge may have failed because the door has been running out of alignment for some time. If the top guide is missing, the pivot is loose, or the track has been bent, the folding action puts extra load on the hinge every time the door moves.

With the door closed, check whether both leaves sit flush and whether the gap around the opening is even. Then open it and look for rubbing at the floor, jamb or neighbouring panel. A small adjustment to the pivot position may be all that is required after the hinge is replaced.

Timber condition matters as well. Repeated movement can enlarge screw holes, particularly in lightweight particleboard or older hollow-core doors. Screws that turn without tightening will allow the hinge to shift, even if the hinge itself is new. Repair the fixing point before fitting replacement hardware. Depending on the door material, this may involve suitable timber repair, longer screws where there is solid material behind the face, or a properly sized fixing solution designed for the panel.

Do not simply fit oversized screws without checking clearance. A screw that is too long can break through the face of a thin door, interfere with a mirror or decorative panel, or catch internal framing.

Measure the details that affect fitment

Two hinges can look nearly identical yet sit differently once installed. The details that matter most are the closed hinge width, open width, leaf length, hole pattern, leaf thickness and finish. The hinge may be surface-fixed, recessed into a shallow mortice, or shaped to provide a particular clearance between the folded leaves.

Also note the handing and orientation. Some bifold arrangements use hardware designed specifically for the top or bottom of the door, while others use universal hinges. If the original hinge is offset or has a cranked profile, check how the panels sit when folded before choosing a flat replacement.

For a white, black, brass or stainless-look door, finish may be a visible consideration. Function and fitment come first, but matching the existing finish can avoid one new hinge standing out against older hardware.

How to Replace a Bifold Door Hinge

Set aside a clear work area and support the door properly before removing hardware. Bifold doors can be awkward to control once a hinge is removed, especially tall wardrobe panels. If the door is heavy, wide or fitted with glass or mirrors, have another person hold it steady.

Start by marking the hinge position with a pencil. A light outline around the old hinge leaves and marks through the screw holes will help position the replacement accurately. If you are replacing more than one hinge, do one at a time where possible so the door leaves remain aligned.

Remove the old screws with a screwdriver that fits the screw head correctly. A worn driver can cam out and damage the screw, turning a straightforward repair into a removal job. If paint has built up around the hinge, carefully score the paint line first so it does not tear away from the door surface.

Once the old hinge is off, clean out loose material from the screw holes and check the hinge seating area. The new hinge must sit flat. A twisted hinge leaf or a lump of old paint behind it can change the door alignment enough to cause binding.

Position the replacement hinge using your pencil marks, then install the screws loosely at first. Close and open the bifold door before fully tightening them. This gives you a chance to correct the hinge position if the panels are not sitting level or the folding gap is too tight. Tighten the screws firmly, but avoid overtightening into soft timber or particleboard.

After fitting, operate the door several times through its full travel. It should fold without force, remain supported in the track and close without a panel springing forward. If it still catches, inspect the pivots and guide before forcing the door. Excess force can bend fresh hardware or strip the new fixings.

When You Need Pivots, Guides or Track Parts Instead

Many customers searching for a bifold hinge are actually dealing with a pivot problem. The common signs are a door that has come out of the top track, a bottom corner dragging, a panel that will not stay aligned, or a door that swings loose rather than folding neatly.

Top pivots and guides keep the door located in the track. Bottom pivots support the door weight in systems designed with a floor bracket or lower socket. Some wardrobe doors use nylon guides, spring-loaded pins or adjustable pivot assemblies, and these can wear gradually until the door becomes difficult to operate.

If a hinge has broken after the door repeatedly jammed, inspect these components before ordering only the hinge. Replacing the cause as well as the visible failure is usually the more durable repair. It is also worth checking the track for dents, loose screws and built-up debris that may be obstructing the guide.

Getting an Accurate Match for Older Bifold Doors

Original paperwork is helpful, but it is not essential. Door hardware is often identifiable by its dimensions, profile, fixing layout and the way it mounts into the system. A photo of the removed part, a ruler in the image and a wider shot of the door can make the matching process much quicker.

Include photos of both sides of the hinge and the location where it fits. If there are markings on the hardware, track or door frame, photograph those too. For pivot and guide parts, show the top and bottom of the door as well as the track opening. This helps distinguish between components that appear similar but have different pin diameters or body sizes.
