How to Identify Unknown Door Hardware Parts
A sliding door can look perfectly ordinary until one small roller, guide or latch fails. Then the repair stops because the old part has no label, the supplier is unknown, and the replacement needs to fit existing holes, tracks and frames. To identify unknown door hardware accurately, treat the removed component as evidence rather than guessing from its general shape.
The right part is not always an exact visual match. Australian doors and windows have been built with many profiles and systems over decades, and similar-looking rollers, handles and catches can differ by only a few millimetres. Those differences matter. A close-but-not-quite part may bind in the track, sit too high in the frame or leave a lock unable to engage.
Start with the hardware's job
Before measuring anything, work out what the component actually does. A sliding door carriage supports the panel's weight and rolls in the bottom track. A guide keeps the panel aligned at the top or bottom. A mortice lock sits inside the door stile, while a pull handle, flush handle or D-handle gives you something to operate from the face of the door.
This sounds obvious, but it narrows the search quickly. A wheel that has fallen from a screen door could be part of a complete corner assembly, not a standalone roller. A loose plastic piece from a sliding door may be a guide, an anti-lift block or a drainage component rather than a broken carriage.
Look at where the part was fitted and what changed when it failed. If the door drags, jams or drops at one end, inspect the rollers and carriage housings. If it rattles or jumps out of position, guides and anti-lift components deserve attention. If the door closes but will not secure, focus on the lock, striker, snib, cylinder and handle set.
Identify unknown door hardware by its key dimensions
Measurements are often more useful than a name. Use a tape measure for larger pieces and vernier callipers for roller wheels, spindle sizes and tight mounting centres. Measure in millimetres and write each result down as you go.
For a carriage or roller assembly, record the housing height, width and depth, plus the wheel diameter and thickness. Note whether there is one wheel or two, whether the wheels are nylon or steel, and how they are positioned. Also check the location and orientation of adjustment screws. An adjuster accessible through the face of the door is different from one reached from the edge or underside.
For handles and locks, the critical details are usually the fixing-centre distance, backset, faceplate size and spindle type. Fixing centres are measured from the centre of one screw hole to the centre of the other. On a mortice lock, the backset is the distance from the front edge of the lock faceplate to the centre of the spindle or cylinder hole.
Do not rely on a single dimension. Two flush pulls might share the same overall length but have different cut-out sizes or screw positions. Likewise, a roller may have the correct wheel diameter but the wrong housing depth for the door stile.
Measure the opening as well as the part
If the old component is broken, corroded or incomplete, the opening it came from can provide the missing information. Measure the cavity in the door or frame, the screw-hole spacing, the track channel and the visible clearance around moving parts.
This is particularly useful for discontinued hardware. A replacement may have an updated housing or a different finish, yet still be suitable if its fitment dimensions, wheel position and adjustment arrangement match the original system.
Look for markings on the door, window and hardware
Manufacturer names and codes are not always stamped on the failed part. Check the door frame, sash, glass corner, lock faceplate, handle underside and roller housing. You may find a brand name, a casting number, a patent number or a short code moulded into plastic.
The door or window manufacturer is also valuable context. Systems from Stegbar, Dowell, Jason Windows, Bradnam's, BGC, Boral, Doric and Rolltrak can use hardware with distinct profiles and mounting arrangements. A label on the frame will not identify every component by itself, but it gives the identification process a much better starting point.
Take care with numbers. A number cast into a roller housing may identify the mould rather than the replacement part number. It is still worth recording, along with every letter and logo, because it can help distinguish between near-identical components.
Take photos that make part matching possible
A dark photo of a roller still buried inside a door is rarely enough to confirm compatibility. Clean loose dirt from the component, remove it where practical and photograph it against a plain background in good light. Include a ruler in at least one image.
For the best chance of an accurate match, photograph these views:
- the front, rear and both side profiles of the removed part
- the wheel, pivot, spring or adjustment screw in close-up
- the screw holes and any stamped or moulded markings
- the opening in the door or frame where the part fits
- the complete door, window or screen, including any manufacturer label
Use the door type to rule out the wrong parts
The same component name can apply to several very different products. A sliding glass door roller is not interchangeable with a wardrobe door roller, a shower-screen roller or a flyscreen corner roller. Each is designed for a different panel weight, track profile and mounting method.
Start by defining the door type: sliding glass door, security screen, flyscreen, wardrobe, shower screen, bifold door or hinged door. Then consider whether the hardware is at the top, bottom, side or closing edge. A bottom roller on an aluminium patio door has a very different load and shape from a top-hung wardrobe wheel.
Material is another useful clue. Older aluminium sliding doors often use adjustable nylon wheels in a metal carriage. Shower screens may use small exposed wheels with chrome or stainless fittings. Screen doors commonly use compact plastic corner assemblies. These patterns are not proof, but they help eliminate unsuitable categories before comparing dimensions.
Check whether the fault is really the part you found
A worn roller is a common cause of a dragging door, but it is not the only one. A damaged track, loose frame, bent panel or failed adjustment screw can produce similar symptoms. Replacing a roller without checking the track may leave the door difficult to operate and quickly wear the new component.
Inspect the matching side of the system. For rollers, inspect the track for dents, flat spots, packed debris and wear. For locks, make sure the door is aligned with the striker before replacing the mechanism. For handles, check whether the spindle, lock body or mounting screws have failed instead of the handle itself.
Where both bottom rollers carry an older sliding door, it is often sensible to assess them as a pair. If one wheel is severely worn, the other may be near the end of its service life. Replacing both can restore an even ride, although this depends on the condition and availability of the matching assemblies.
When an exact match is essential
Some hardware allows a compatible replacement; other items need to match precisely. Lock bodies, cylinder cut-outs, sliding door carriages, recessed pulls and track-specific guides usually require close confirmation of dimensions and configuration. A part that almost fits can create a security issue or cause expensive damage to an aluminium door stile.
Finishes can often be more flexible. A replacement handle in black, white, chrome or satin finish may be acceptable if its mounting centres, projection and spindle arrangement are correct. Functional fitment comes first, particularly for rental maintenance and repair work where getting the door operating smoothly matters more than reproducing an older finish exactly.
