Sliding Door Carriage Replacement Made Simple
A sliding door that scrapes, rattles, needs a shoulder to move or refuses to lock cleanly is often not a door replacement job. In many cases, a correctly matched sliding door carriage replacement will restore the door’s height, movement and closing alignment for a fraction of the cost of a new door.
The catch is that sliding door carriages are not a one-size-fits-all part. Two rollers can look nearly identical from the outside while having different wheel diameters, housing dimensions, mounting positions or adjustment screws. Getting the match right before ordering is what turns a frustrating repair into a lasting one.
What a sliding door carriage does
A carriage, often called a roller assembly, sits at the bottom of a sliding door panel and carries its weight on the track. Most patio doors use two carriages, one near each bottom corner. Their wheels run along the bottom track while an adjustment mechanism raises or lowers the door.
When a carriage wears out, the wheel may develop a flat spot, seize on its axle or wear down until the door sits too low. The housing can also crack, and adjustment screws can corrode or strip. The result is familiar: the door drags on the track, catches near the jamb, has a large gap at the top or will not engage properly with its lock and keeper.
A worn track can cause similar symptoms, so inspect both components. Still, a badly worn carriage is one of the most common reasons an aluminium sliding door becomes hard to operate.
Signs your door needs new carriages
A door does not need to be completely immovable before its rollers deserve attention. Early replacement can prevent unnecessary damage to the track, frame and locking hardware.
Look for signs such as a door that has become noticeably heavier to slide, a grinding or clicking sound from the bottom rail, black residue or metal filings around the track, or a panel that drops out of alignment after adjustment. If the door only moves when lifted slightly by hand, the carriages are particularly likely to be worn or seized.
Poor locking can also be a carriage issue. As the wheels wear down, the panel drops and the lock no longer meets its keeper at the correct height. Before replacing a lock that will not latch, check whether the door is sitting low on the closing side.
Identify the carriage before you remove it
The most reliable way to identify a replacement is to remove one existing carriage and compare the complete assembly. Avoid choosing a part from wheel diameter alone. The wheel is only one part of the fitment.
Start by identifying the door system if possible. Many Australian homes have doors manufactured by Stegbar, Dowell, Jason Windows, Bradnam’s, BGC, Boral, Doric or Rolltrak, but hardware can vary between product ranges and production periods. A brand name on the glass, frame or compliance label is useful, though it is not always enough to confirm the exact carriage.
Once the panel is safely removed, take clear photos of the carriage from the side, front, back and underneath. Include a ruler or tape measure in at least one image. Record the housing length, width and depth; wheel diameter and width; screw-hole locations; the shape of the adjustment screw; and whether the wheel is steel, nylon or another material.
Also note how the carriage sits inside the bottom rail. Some are held by screws through the side of the door, while others are retained through the underside or are accessed through a cut-out in the extrusion. A housing that is only a few millimetres different can prevent correct installation or leave the door at the wrong height.

Choosing the right sliding door carriage replacement
Compatibility matters more than whether a roller looks close enough. A suitable sliding door carriage replacement should match the original housing profile, fixing arrangement and adjustment range, as well as the wheel dimensions.
Wheel material is worth considering. Nylon wheels can run quietly and are commonly used in domestic aluminium doors. Steel wheels may be specified for particular tracks or heavier panels. Fitting a different wheel material without checking the track type can lead to premature wear, noise or poor travel.
Load rating matters as well. Larger glass panels, security doors and older heavy aluminium doors place significant weight on the roller assemblies. If one carriage has failed, replacing both is usually the sensible approach. The second carriage has carried the same load and is likely to be near the end of its service life, even if it still turns.
It is also worth inspecting related components while the door is out. A bent or deeply grooved track, damaged bottom guide, worn weather seals and loose handle or lock screws can all affect how the repaired door performs. Replacing rollers without removing built-up dirt from the track may make a new set of carriages feel disappointing from day one.
Removing and refitting the door safely
Sliding door panels are heavy, awkward and easy to damage. For larger glass doors, use two people and protect the work area before starting. Do not rely on the adjustment screws alone to support the panel while you work.
Most sliding doors are removed by winding the carriage adjustments up to lower the panel, then lifting the door into the top channel and swinging the bottom out over the track. Some doors have anti-lift blocks, security stops or fixed panels that must be dealt with first. If the panel will not come out easily, stop rather than forcing it. There may be a hidden stop, screw or removal sequence specific to that system.
Lay the panel flat on padded supports with the bottom rail accessible. Remove the carriage retaining screws, slide or lever out the old units as the extrusion allows, then install the replacements in the same orientation. Check that each wheel turns freely and that the adjustment screws can be reached once the door is reinstalled.
Clean the track thoroughly before refitting. Vacuum out grit, wipe away old residue and inspect for raised dents or sharp damage. Avoid heavy grease on most sliding door tracks because it collects dust and turns into abrasive paste. A suitable dry lubricant may help where recommended for the door system, but clean rollers and a clean track are the starting point.
Adjust the door for smooth travel and a reliable lock
After the panel is back in place, adjust both bottom carriages gradually. Raise one side a little at a time, checking the gap around the frame and the way the lock meets the keeper. The aim is a level panel that slides without rubbing, closes squarely and locks without needing to be lifted or pushed hard.
Do not wind one carriage to its maximum height while leaving the other low. That twists the panel and can create new rubbing points. If the door remains difficult to move after adjustment, look again at the track and top guides. A damaged track or incorrect replacement carriage cannot be solved by forcing the adjustment screws.
Test the door several times from fully open to fully closed. Listen for clicking, check that the meeting stile lines up evenly, and confirm the lock works from both sides. A few extra minutes spent on adjustment makes a significant difference to daily use and reduces stress on the new hardware.
When a carriage replacement is not enough
Sometimes worn rollers are only part of the problem. A track with severe corrosion, a flattened running surface or a section that has lifted from the sill may need repair before any new carriage will run properly. Likewise, a door that has a bowed frame, damaged glass or major corrosion around the bottom rail may need professional assessment.
For most sticking doors, though, accurate part identification, a matched pair of quality carriages and careful adjustment are the practical repair. Keep the old carriage until the new one is installed and the door is operating correctly. It remains the best reference if you need to check a measurement, orientation or fixing detail.
